Many of you will know this line from “Mr. Mom.” Michael Keaton is “faking” his way through a home rehab conversation with someone who actually knows what he’s talking about. What does this have to do with me? Nothing really BUT connecting does!
For the last several months I’ve been talking about being connected, finding people on Social Media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, etc. All of that’s important BUT I may have left out what I think is one of the most important steps if all…connecting in person. While it may not always be necessary, I think it’s really powerful to do so and creates more of a connection and possibilty to keep that connection.
When you connect with someone via Social Media or any online platform, what’s your next step? If you can’t answer, you’re probably not getting the most out of your connections.
Here’s what I suggest:
- Follow up any connection with a personal message.
Don’t just accept it and that’s it. Make sure you do a little homework on the business or company that the connection is associated with. That way when you follow up, you’ll be educated somewhat about the business and can make some points or comments surrounding that. That will show that you mean business and that you took some time to investigate. That speaks volumes. - In the personal message, ask them to meet for coffee or lunch in order to discuss their business more. This is really where the connection gets traction. Now, there’s more than just a “virtual” connection but also a chance for a stronger relationship. It’s easier for someone to remember you and your business when you take the time to do so for them.
- After the meeting, do another follow up and thank
them for taking the time. Again, you’re committed to making the most out of this and it shows. - Next, connect them with people that you think would be good contacts for them. Send an e-introduction and make sure to include something specific to your relationship with both parties to give each a better place to relate. Include their website and something about their business as well. Thsi not only helps them both expand their netorks but also sets you up to a be a networker and resource for all businesses.
- Last, go back to one and start all over again. You are never off the train unless you want to be out of business. Connecting, relating and staying in communication are all part of doing business successfully. Making it more personal makes it more powerful.
With all of that being said, I hope to connect with you both virtually AND personally. Let me know some of your successful stories and happy connecting!
